Why teams switch

FirstPromoter is well reviewed, and its support gets the most praise. These are the gaps its users and its own pages point to, and what Tolt does instead.

  • Setup

    Setup takes work.

On G2, integration issues and a learning curve are the cons reviewers name most, and one brought in an outside expert to finish setup. On Capterra, a CEO calls onboarding fairly complex. On Trustpilot, review after review thanks support for fixing a Stripe, webhook or tracking setup.

Connect Stripe, Paddle or Chargebee in about 15 minutes, with client- or server-side tracking, and launch the same day. Stuck? Live chat is there while you set up.

  • Branding

    Your own domain costs extra.

Its $49 Starter plan leaves out a custom domain and white-labeling, and caps a program at 1,000 affiliates and three campaigns. All of them start on Business, at $99 a month.

    With Tolt

Every Tolt plan has a branded portal on your own domain, like affiliates.yourdomain.com, and unlimited affiliates.

  • Payments

    Paying affiliates is Enterprise-only.

Its Managed Auto Payouts are on Enterprise only, from $149 a month, for SaaS companies it approves after a review. It pays once a month: partners get their money 7–10 days after yours lands, and pay a fee to withdraw it.

    Reporting is the weak spot.

G2’s summary of its reviews names reporting as the area to improve.

  • FirstPromoter’s comparison

    It gets Tolt wrong.

FirstPromoter’s own Tolt comparison says Tolt has no auto payouts or invoicing, no tax form collection and no team roles.

    With Tolt

Tolt has all three: auto payouts with an invoice for every partner, W-9 and W-8 forms with 1099s filed, and team roles for everyone on your team.

Bootstrapping a SaaS we wanted to create an affiliate program and discovered FirstPromoter. We gave it a try and found it quite complicated to set up. We then discovered Tolt on Google. The onboarding was very smooth. The set up even smoother. It took us less than 30mn to make it ready to run.

Why Tolt

01 Auto payouts

We know how busy growing a startup can get, so why take on another time-consuming job like paying affiliates? Turn on auto payouts, and spend that time finding new customers, or even new affiliates.

went from one to three working days of payouts a month to zero hours.

FirstPromoter can pay your partners too, but only on Enterprise, for SaaS companies it approves after a review, and once a month. On every Tolt plan, you approve one invoice and your partners are paid by PayPal, Wise, bank transfer or wire, with their tax forms on file.

02 Tax compliance

Before anyone is paid, Tolt collects a W-9 from US partners and a W-8BEN or W-8BEN-E from everyone else. Each January, it files a 1099 for every eligible US partner.

On FirstPromoter, partners upload their W-9 or W-8BEN in the portal, but filing 1099s isn’t on its plan list. On Tolt it’s part of auto payouts, on every plan.

03 Fraud protection

Stop paying for fake conversions and self-referrals. Tolt protects your margins automatically, before payouts ever leave your account.

FAQ

Why switch

01But why do you need a FirstPromoter alternative?

We don’t hate FirstPromoter, but the Tolt features above are definitely something to consider. Tolt comes out ahead on its price to features ratio and on its UX: a branded portal on your own domain on every plan, auto payouts on every plan instead of only on Enterprise, and 1099s filed for you. Simple as that.

02How much does FirstPromoter cost compared with Tolt?

Both price by the revenue your partners bring in, and neither takes a cut of it. FirstPromoter starts at $49 a month, but a custom domain starts on Business, at $99, and paying partners for you on Enterprise, from $149. Tolt starts at $99, with a branded portal on your own domain and auto payouts on every plan.

03Does FirstPromoter pay affiliates for you?

Only on Enterprise. Its Managed Auto Payouts are for SaaS companies it approves after a review: it pays once a month, partners get their money 7–10 days later and pay a fee to withdraw it. On every other plan you pay them yourself, by PayPal, Wise, Stripe, crypto or bank transfer. Tolt pays your partners for you on every plan.

04Does FirstPromoter file 1099s?

Its plans list collecting W-9 and W-8BEN forms, which partners upload in its portal, but not filing 1099s. Tolt does both: it collects the forms before anyone is paid, and files 1099s for eligible US partners each January.
